Improving the performance of natural and synthetic fibers has relied upon incorporation of “forever” chemicals to impart water beading and stain resistant properties to many materials including upholstery, carpeting and outerwear.  It may come as a surprise that PFAS are not necessarily “forever” embedded in the fibers, but “forever” part of our world. Levels of PFAS in drinking water and the environment continue to rise.

In a rather shocking revelation, PFAS have even been found on Mt. Everest. They are thought to have been shed from climber’s parkas and outdoor gear. The time to remove “forever” chemicals from consumer products is overdue.

Biobased waxes can impart water beading and when properly formulated, stain resistant properties to the same types of applications ‘forever” chemicals have been utilized. Although the performance may not have the longevity of “forever’ chemicals, they can be replenished to renew performance as they naturally biodegrade into harmless materials.
